Course Description

Painting, Restoration & Design is available to all high school students interested in learning the fundamentals of exterior and interior painting, interior decorating and design, wood finishing and refinishing, drywall finishing, texturing, spray painting, and faux finishing. Students learn through a combination of theory and hands-on training. They apply paint to the interior and exterior surfaces of walls and buildings for the purpose of protection and decoration.


Students are taught how to properly use brushes, rollers, and spray equipment. Decorative wallpaper, borders, vinyl, fabric, and other materials will be applied to walls giving students an opportunity to utilize actual procedures and skills. Related math teaches the students how to measure properly, estimate and plan work. This course stresses the development of sound work habits and the understanding of labor and management. It provides knowledge of materials and their uses, while exposing students to the proper and safe use of equipment and tools.

Skills Learned

Some of the skills a student will be able to perform are interior decorating and design, texturing, floor plan placement, cost analysis, stain application, functional use of space, priming a surface, wallboard finishing, estimating materials, lettering, planning a job, spray painting, varnish application, furniture refinishing, brush & roll techniques, surface preparation, application of wall coverings, and color mixing and matching.
