Course Description

The HVAC/R field is a two, three, or four year competency based program, which affords many opportunities to those interested in designing, selling, manufacturing, installing and servicing its equipment. There is an increasing demand for people who are willing to become proficient in any or all of those areas. The HVAC/R student begin with electrical systems & advance through projects at their own pace. Included in the program is sizing, layout and installation of electric, gas and oil fired systems. Training includes wiring, plumbing, refrigeration piping and the sheet metal fabrication necessary to complete an entire heating & air conditioning installation.


Households, apartments, factories, schools, hospitals and offices require the services of HVAC technicians for repair and replacement of existing equipment and new installations. As technicians in training, students will develop their skills on "live" equipment as well as on improving customer relations. Students can excel in the heating and air conditioning field if they, desire to work in a challenging field, have disciplined themselves to work, wish to further their education in a growing industry, want to earn above average wages, take pride in their workmanship, have the mental and mechanical abilities.

Skills Learned

Some of the skills a student will be able to perform are sheet metal fabrication, electrical controls, circuitry, piping, soldering/brazing, gas heating systems, oil heating systems, air conditioning, heat pump technology, psychrometrics and blueprint reading.

Realated Occupations and Earnings

Related occupations include HVAC Mechanic, Installer, Field Service Technician and Boiler Technician. Earnings range between $12-$22/hour.

Post-Secondary Opportunities:

Articulated credits can be earned toward an Associate’s Degree at Institutions such as Westmoreland County Community College, Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology and Johnson College.
