Course Description

Electrical Technology, open to all interested students grades 9-12, consists of four main parts: Theory of electricity, residential wiring, commercial wiring, and industrial wiring. Electricity is a competency-based program, taught with the aid of text, DVD’s, demonstrators, lectures, and equipment. Some areas covered are: fundamental electrical quantities, blueprint reading, conduit bending, national electric code, motors, measuring instruments, and much more.


Residential wiring begins with splicing wires, wiring circuits, lights and receptacles. Commercial wiring practices are used to wire restaurants, school buildings, public buildings, malls, hospitals, etc. industrial wiring consists of large power supplies, motor controls, transformers, and most of the electrical equipment used in today's industrial plants. Students who complete the program can look forward to a solid background with which to pursue a job in the electrical field.

Skills Learned

Some of the skills a student will be able to perform are safety, care, and use of hand tools, nature of electricity, ohms law, residential wiring, electrical circuits, motor control wiring, troubleshooting, advanced circuitry, commercial wiring, national electrical code, transformers, blueprint reading, conduit installation, Network Cabling Copper and Fiber, cable skills, as well as, telecommunications, and motors.

Related occupations include residential electricians, mine electricians, industrial electrician, commercial electrician, wiring specialist, cable technicians, telephone technicians, electrical inspector, and railroad signal maintenance. Earnings range between $12-$24/hour.

Post-Secondary Opportunities:

Articulated credits can be earned toward an Associate’s Degree at Institutions such as Johnson College, Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, or Westmoreland County Community College.
