Course Description

The Cosmetology Program at Central Westmoreland Career and Technology Center is designed to prepare each student for a career as a licensed Cosmetologist upon graduation. The students will be provided the opportunity to practice their skills in a simulated salon environment. Students will work with mannequins, fellow students and salon guests/ clients. The Cosmetology Program is a 3-year course which involves a minimum of 1250 hours of competency based instruction. The Pennsylvania State Board of Cosmetology mandates 1250 hours of training to register for Professional State Licensure so mandatory attendance is very important in this program.

Skills Learned

The student will learn haircutting, manicuring, hair coloring, facials, wet hairstyling, thermal hair styling, acrylic nails, permanent waving, scalp treatments, shampooing and conditioning, sterilization and sanitation, chemical relaxers, employment skills, receptionist duties, anatomy, related math and PA Cosmetology rules and regulations.

Related Occupations and Earnings

Related occupations include Hair Stylist's Assistant, Esthetician Makeup Artist, Receptionist, Hair Stylist and Nail Technician. Entry level earnings range between $17,170 and $23,680 statewide. Studio makeup, platform artist, medical esthetics, cosmetology instructor and salon manager.

Post-Secondary Opportunities:

Students may choose to continue their education at institutions such as Empire Beauty School, Douglas Education Center and Laurel Business Institute.
