Course Description

Building Construction Technology is a competency based program. Skilled building construction mechanics must have general knowledge in many skill areas so that they may perform repairs on existing facilities and aid in the construction of new buildings. Basic skills include plumbing, carpentry, electricity, painting, wall covering, and masonry. Students are given the fundamentals of related math and blueprint reading. You will receive instruction on the use of hand and power tools. Students are given adequate time to perform quality work, and the proper care and use of a wide variety of construction tools and machinery.

Personal safety and overall job performance is stressed continually throughout the program. Prospective students should like to work with their hands and have a desire to work in various construction areas. Upon graduation, students that have successfully completed the course can confidently seek employment with the maintenance staff of an institution, work in a related construction area, or become self-employed.

Skills Learned

Some of the skills a student will be able to perform are framing, exterior and interior covering, rough in and the installation of plumbing fixtures, preparing surface areas for painting, install and repair electrical circuits, install a hot water tank, install drywall and finish, construct various brick and block walls, maintain and clean heating equipment, layout a building and foundation.

Realated Occupations and Earnings

Related occupations include building maintenance person, building supervisor, electrical maintenance person, carpenter, roofer, and electrician. Earnings range between $12-$22/hour.

Post-Secondary Opportunities:

Articulated credits can be earned toward an Associate’s Degree at Institutions such as Commonwealth Technical Institute, Johnson College and Orleans Technical Institute.
